iPhone 11 Review: Should You Upgrade?

Amidst the never-ending buzz of 2020 iPhone rumors, Apple unveiled its new iPhone last month; the iPhone 11. While you’ll still have to wait for 5G compatibility, reverse wireless charging, and laser-guided AR applications; the new model is packed with exciting changes. And, at a lower starting price point than we’ve seen from Apple in years, it’s worth determining whether or not an upgrade is right for you. Read our iPhone 11 review to find out some of the new features of this smartphone.

Our Favorite Features: An iPhone 11 Review

This year’s refresh of the Apple iPhone line offers up three new models; the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. The tech giant put camera and software updates at the forefront this year, but there are plenty of other features to get excited about as well.

  1. More Advanced Cameras

This years camera update is the stand-out feature on the iPhone 11. A large, square camera bump houses two 12-megapixel sensors on the back of the phone. The rear camera housing includes both the standard, wide-angle lens and a new ultra-wide lens for capturing an even wider field of view. The front-facing camera received an upgrade as well, bumping up to a 12-megapixel sensor and adding in ‘slofies,’ slow-motion selfie functionality. When capturing video, the device stands out, shooting 4K video at 60 frames per second on all three cameras.

If you want to add a telephoto lens to your array, you’ll have to upgrade to the iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max.

  2. New Image Processing Capabilities

Not only are the cameras improved, but the software that manages your photos also has some new tricks up its sleeve. The iPhone 11 is capable of Night Mode, a feature that allows you to take low-light photos without flash. When activated, the camera takes multiple pictures, and the software gets to work merging and adjusting the images for a natural look.

Plus, the phone also has more support for Portrait mode than before. Not only can you now use the feature on your furry friends, but it also includes a new portrait lighting effect. Later this fall, Apple will also be unveiling Deep Fusion. This technology uses machine learning to combine multiple images, pulling the best quality pixel from each one.

  3. Increased Processor Performance

The bionic chip behind these new imaging abilities is worth noting, too. The iPhone 11 has an A13 bionic processor, which Apple says will boost the phone’s performance at least 20 percent over last year’s iPhone.

  4. More Battery Life

Not only is the chip more powerful; it’s also more power-efficient. No more rushing for an outlet, since the new tech can handle background tasks without sucking your battery dry. Apple claims that the iPhone 11’s battery life can withstand 17 hours of video playback. Plus, with fast-charge capability, you can recharge faster than ever. While the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max come with a fast charger, you’ll have to shell out some extra bucks for a faster charger with the iPhone 11 since it comes with the standard, 5W model.

  5. Display Updates

The 6.1-inch Liquid Retina HD display of the iPhone 11 means accurate colors for everything you do. True Tone display shifts to fit the white balance to wherever you are so that you’re never straining or squinting to see things correctly. The iPhone 11 doesn’t include the OLED screen that the Pro and Pro Max have, but you probably won’t notice the difference if you’re coming from an iPhone XR or earlier.

  6. Other Features to Note

If that’s not enough, the iPhone 11 also includes improvements to durability, security, and other upgrades including:

    • IP68 Rating; water-resistant up to two meters for 30 minutes, twice the depth of the iPhone XR
    • Precision milled, dual-ion exchanged front and back glass for added strength
    • Faster and more secure Face ID
    • The retirement of 3D Touch and switch to Haptic Touch
    • Brand new color options in aerospace-grade aluminum
    • iOS 13 as a standard

So, should you upgrade to the iPhone 11? Unless you’re dying for the best Apple can offer, the features of this phone are likely enough to make you very happy.
