A Complete Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL Review

Utilize this Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL review to help you decide whether or not you should upgrade to the latest Google smartphone.

Camera

It’s clear that Google’s main focus with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL was designing the smartphone world’s best camera. According to Google, it’s the highest-rated camera on any smartphone, and we can’t help but agree. Both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature a 12.2-megapixel camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. This upgrade makes for some pretty awesome photos and performs well in a variety of settings. If a high-performing camera is your top priority in your smartphone search, consider the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL as the top contender.

Design

Larger than the original Pixel, the Pixel 2 measures at 5.7 inches long. For an even bigger smartphone, users can opt for the Pixel 2 XL, which measures at 6.2 inches long. Aside from size, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are almost identical. Though Google may have hit a home run with their camera, users are critiquing the phones’ lack of a headphone jack. Following Apple’s new iPhone design, both of the second-generation Pixel phones have swapped their headphone jack for a more robust speaker system. Users who want to continue using their headphones can purchase a headphone jack adapter for about $20.

Battery Life

The Pixel 2 has an all-day battery life with a size of 2,700mAh, which is slightly smaller than the larger version’s 3,520mAh. Though some users have criticized the smartphones for shorter than expected battery life, the average smartphone user shouldn’t have an issue with the Pixel 2 running out of juice too quickly. For comparison, both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have a battery life that is about the same as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, and the iPhone 8 Plus.

Software

Another notable upgrade on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL is the addition of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. This new processor makes both phones lightning fast and is a step up from the original Pixel. In addition to the processor, the smartphones run on the Android Oreo operating system. The Oreo operating system also helps make the phones faster and limits background activity to conserve power. Second-generation Pixel users also get to enjoy the addition of Active Edge. Following HTC, Google employed this feature which launches Assistant when the user grips the phone tighter.

Is the Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL for You?

While the original Pixel certainly got an upgrade with the second editions, deciding to purchase the smartphone heavily depends on your personal preferences. If your number one priority is owning a smartphone with the best camera on the market, either Google Pixel 2 model will suit your photography needs. However, if you’re still happy with your current phone and aren’t dazzled by Google’s upgrades, consider keeping your smartphone for a while longer.
