If you’ve determined your Surface Pro 4 needs a new a battery, see our suggestions below.

Microsoft Service Center Repair

Upon purchasing your Surface Pro 4, you automatically receive a one-year limited hardware warranty and 90 days of technical support. While this may appear to be enough protection for your tablet, it’s important to read the fine print in Microsoft’s warranty options.

Any physical or accidental damage to your Surface Pro 4 is classified as an out-of-warranty repair. In other words, to fix your damaged tablet, you’ll need to file an out-of-warranty service order. To get the replacement, you’ll need to register your device online and then ship your damaged Surface Pro to Microsoft. Upon receiving your damaged device, Microsoft will send you back a refurbished Surface Pro 4.

If you’re not fond of receiving a refurbished replacement in lieu of a repair, you may want to consider purchasing Microsoft Complete. This additional warranty costs $149 and offers some much-needed protection. It will add two accidental repairs to your warranty as well as two full years of coverage from your tablet’s purchase date. Two things to consider with this option is that you’re still responsible for paying a deductible on your accidental damage repairs, and this coverage option is only available for 45 days after your tablet’s purchase date.

If you’d like to perform the replacement yourself, follow these directions. Again, be aware that DIY repairs on tablets can be both difficult and in some cases, further damage the device. If you’d still like to proceed with the repair yourself, these guidelines will help.

  1. Before you start working, completely power off the tablet.
  2. Once the tablet is off, place the device in front of you as if you were to begin using it.
  3. To detach the screen from the rest of the tablet, heat the adhesive with a heating pad.
  4. After heating and weakening the adhesive, place a small pick in between the screen and the body of the tablet. NOTE: If you’re having trouble inserting the pick, the upper left and right corners of the tablet provide easier access.
  5. Slide the pick in the created opening around the entirety of the device.
  6. After going around the edges of the tablet with the pick, attach a suction cup to the screen on either the left or right side. Once attached, pull the suction cup to further separate the screen and the base.
  7. Exposing the interior of the device, locate the two display cables that connect to the body of the screen.
  8. Disconnect the cable on the right with an opening tool. Place the tool under the edge of the connector and pry it loose by pulling upwards.
  9. Locate the display cable on the left and pry the metal casing away from it with a plastic spudger.
  10. Once the casing is loose, pull it off and unplug the cable with the same opening tool used in step 8.
  11. At this point, the display should be completely free from the rest of the device. You may lift it off and place it nearby.
  12. Locate the motherboard in the upper right-hand corner.
  13. Using the same method as in step 9, remove the metal casing covering the motherboard.
  14. After prying around the edges sufficiently, you may now completely remove the casing and set it aside.
  15. Identify the four 1.5mm Torx T4 screws stabilizing the heat sink to the now exposed motherboard.
  16. Near the bottom of the tablet, locate the copper-colored plate and the single 1.5mm Torx T3 screw. Remove the screw and leave the copper plate in place.
  17. Locate the 1.5mm Torx T4 screw stabilizing the heat sink tubing to the rest of the tablet and unscrew it.
  18. Unscrew the other 3.0mm Torx T4 screw adjacent to the screw listed in the previous step.
  19. The heat sink is now free and able to be removed completely. NOTE: When reassembling the Surface Pro 4, reapply the thermal paste when installing the heat sink.
  20. Locate the black wire that is connected to the motherboard and disconnect it.
  21. Identify the five screws holding the motherboard in place and unscrew and remove them.
  22. At the bottom left-hand corner of the motherboard, use your opening tool to take off the metal casing.
  23. Locate the final 2.0mm Torx T4 screw and unscrew it.
  24. The battery is located under adhesive tape which will need to be removed to expose the battery entirely. Wedge your opening tool under the battery to loosen the tape’s bond.
  25. Once loosened, carefully pull the battery up and away from the rest of the tablet.
  26. Disconnect the battery from the motherboard to completely free it from the device.
  27. Replace the old battery with a new one.
  28. To reassemble your Surface Pro 4, follow these steps in reverse.
